The Wait

JH Mancy

Tallebudgera, QLD

Why did you lose life’s thread;
Lying there ashen, hospital bed.
The doctors say that you ought to be dead –
And for sure you’d be better off dead!
Body broken and mind a twisted wreck –
Release not gained by sorrowful confess.
They’ll never understand, nor forgive –
How can their child die and yet you live!
Then what could you do to save the child;
Your eyes bleary with drink, actions wild
What I’d have given were you not dogged
By the murderous curse of grog!
With sigh you were gone. I could shed no tear,
For I knew you would wish this road.
No, you could not live with conscience clear,
It would be too heavy a load.
So I bid farewell to a friend I rate –
Ah, but friends are more precious than gold!
You made a mistake, your judgment too late:
In memory you’ll ever wax bold.

    This is a sad poem , yet all too real, JH. Your choice of words and the way in which you have written this piece do, in my opinion, add to the poignancy.

    Sad indeed JH, but well worded and just the right length for the sentiment. Seeing, not a monster but only one who foolishly thought that they could conquer the conquering drink and lost to pay the ultimate price of life twice, theirs and someone else's. Saddest of all is that for all such warnings, still others are always ready to take up that same challenge and they too must eventually
